Are there any uni's over there that accept older students with no science background in school?

What kind of jobs do undergraduates get on graduation?

Most will, I think. Check out the websites of:
Edinburgh (of course!)
Bristol
Leicester
Sheffield
Liverpool
Oxford
The London Uni's (UCL, Imperial)

They should be able to confirm the entry requirements. Most mature stuidents need some industrial experience or to do some kind of introductary course first.

As for jobs...Most end up in graduate jobs (finance, managament, etc). Some end up in academia (Masters, PhD, postdoctoral research, researhcer, lecturer, etc). Some will work for industry (not so comon after a Batchelors, but it does happen). Mixed bag really. There aren't many geological jobs out there, so you have to work hard to get them and oil companies tend to like masters or PhD's. Hope this helps Smiling face

There is Open University that I believe can be done from anywhere. They encourage you do do a science foundation course first, really to bring you up to speed.
You'll find it on the web, sorry I don't know the URL

Thanks folks. Smiling face I was actually considering going back and doing a science course. Hmm... just looking Imperial's site has got me feeling intimidated. hehe...

Does someone starting in the oil/mining industry get much opportunity to fool around with rocks and stuff or do you have to be a researcher type?

Oil/Mining

Depends what you mean by fooling around?! Mining generally yes - you'll be doing a lot of mapping of rocks and rock types over a large area if you are in exploration (finding mineral deposits) and if you are actually working at a mine, lots of detailed mapping underground or in open pits (at 1:100 scale or less) to tell the engineers basically where to dig!. Oil industry, less so - lots of looking at pseudo-rocks, e.g. seismic data, borehole geophysical data, as well as core, and maybe a bit of mapping...

That's sort of what I had in mind. I was wondering if someone who goes into the oil industry sees much of rocks. Sounds like a bit of a dissapointment doesn't it?

Hi Smiling face

I am currently studying Geology at the University of Greenwich, and I didn't have any background qualifications in Science. All I had was an NVQ, BTEC and a modern apprenticeship in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering.

As for jobs after graduation, the choice is vast. There's jobs in Geoengineering, Geophysics, oil & mineral exploration, teaching... the list goes on!

Thanks,

Tom

I don't think you need any formal qualifications to do a geology-related degree at Birmingham. It'll depend on exactly which course you want to do though obviously!

If you're interested then try going to www.bham.ac.uk and I suggest getting in contact with Andy Chambers, since he's the admissions officer for the department. He's a very nice man, I'm sure he'll be able to help you!

Thanks for the info! Smiling face

By any chance has anyone around here done an undergraduate outside the US/UK/Canada? I was looking around for some place that gives you a high standard without the expense. I'm from Asia so if I get into the UK I'll be paying the international student fees. Not to mention the cost of living in the UK.

I know what you mean. There are a lot of international students at my campus, and they do say the costs are too expensive. Many I know are working 2 or 3 jobs. The cost of living as a student should be ok if you live on campus, but outside...

Thanks,

Tom

I'd still have to be really rich. Winking
